Currently serving in his 11th year and third consecutive term after first being elected in 2007, South Bend Common Councilman Oliver Davis (D-6th) has worked hard to represent the 6th District and the residents of South Bend. Serving the citizens of South Bend is one of Oliver’s greatest honors. Throughout his tenure on the Common Council, Councilman Oliver has continued to see the 6th District grow and revive as a strong economic region for the City of South Bend.
For 26 years, Councilman Oliver has worked in the profession of social work. He is currently working as a school social worker for the South Bend Community School Corporation (SBCSC), where he presently serves at Dickinson Fine Arts Academy and Coquillard Primary School. He has also worked as a school social worker at Marquette, Perley, Hay, Darden, Marshall and Madison Schools within the SBCSC.
Councilman Oliver has worked as a social work educator at several institutions of higher learning including teaching on Indiana University South Bend School of Social Work Faculty from 1994-2003; serving on the Social Work Faculty at Andrews University, 2003 to 2010, in which he served as an Asst. Professor of Social Work and served as the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Program Director for six years.
Councilman Oliver worked from 2010 to 2018 in private practice at Goldstein and Associates in South Bend, Indiana, where he provided counseling to individuals, to children, to youth, and to families who are in crisis. He began his career in South Bend, Indiana, working at Madison Center, Inc. & Hospital, where he served as a child & adolescent therapist from 1992-1993.
For seven years, he had his own counseling office in South Bend, Visions Counseling Center, in which he provided counseling services to individuals and to families, many who were court ordered to counseling. He also provided empowering workshops for churches and various organizations, particularly in the areas of domestic violence within the church and enhancing the diversity within the organization.
Currently, Councilman Oliver is working on the Doctor of Social Work (DSW) Degree at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, California, where he is scheduled to graduate in 2019. He earned the Master of Social Work (MSW) Degree from Ohio State University in 1992, completed the Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) Degree from Oakwood University in Huntsville, Alabama, in 1991, and graduated from the South Bend Regional Chamber of Commerce Leadership Program – Class 33, in 2007.
Councilman Oliver, who is the third child & only son born to life-time educators Drs. Oliver (Sr.) & Ruth Faye Davis, is married to Lynda R. (Hodges) Davis, who is also an educator. They have two lovely daughters – Starr D. Davis and Kailyn M. Davis and two awesome sons – Geoff Simons and Marc Simons. The Davises have a beautiful chocolate black lab named Pepper S. Davis. Councilman Oliver loves to cook, to travel, to watch football, basketball, and tennis, and is a lover of history.
