One late evening in October 2012, I was shopping in downtown Chicago and witnessed many street homeless people lying on a cold sidewalk with no blankets after panhandling all day. I felt I had to do something.
In 2 weeks I returned and distributed 25 new blankets to the homeless. It went over so well that I decided to keep bringing blankets all winter. I created a Facebook page to receive donations, and it took off quickly. In a few months we filed to be incorporated, and a year and five months later we became a 501(c)(3) charity organization.
Michiana Five for the Homeless continues from that one small act of kindness to grow in many ways, and each year we have done more than the year before. We expect greater things year after year. My passion and vision to see an end to homelessness in Michiana is what inspires me daily.
